But did you ever imagine you could have a different lifestyle from your neighbours a few blocks away in the same suburb? Paddington is a great example of how the street you choose can impact on the range of activities and lifestyle at your doorstep.
What are the different areas in Paddington?
In our experience, Paddington can be roughly divided into three areas. They may be right next to each other and offer a similar gorgeous parkside ambience. However, each also provides its own slightly different Paddo lifestyle.
This is the main grid of streets located North of Oxford Street where the buzz of the shops and restaurants gives way to classic terrace homes. This central area includes streets such as Elizabeth and Jersey, Underwood, Paddington, Windsor, Hargreave and Sutherland. It’s urban, but the trees and houses give it a unique charm, as do the cafes, pubs and galleries. And it’s also what most people think of as being quintessential “Paddington”.
Paddington South adjoins Moore Park and Centennial Park on the southern side of Oxford Street. It’s quieter than the northern side and that brings its own benefits, especially a relaxed and hidden vibe that’s very different to the other side of Oxford Street. In fact, some people can even forget Paddington South is even there, making it a bit of a real estate secret.
North of Glenmore Road
The area North of Glenmore Road stretches from Five Ways down Glenmore Road to Rushcutters Bay and includes Brown, Stephen, Goodhope, Glenview and Dillon Streets. Some properties in this part of Paddo have views to the water, and all are within walking distance of Five Ways village and the park at Rushcutters Bay, as well as St Vincent’s Hospital. At this end, This area merges with the area we call “Paddinghurst”.
This part of Paddington offers the best of several lifestyles, with Sydney Harbour nearby, the inner city buzz on your doorstep and all with the appeal of parkside living.
New development has changed the area
The area North of Glenmore Road has benefited enormously from three key things in recent years, each of which has contributed towards making it an even more desirable place to live.
1. The transformation of Rushcutters Bay
One factor that has really connected Paddington to Rushcutters Bay is the cafe culture that has sprung up around the Advanx development. This has been driven by an increased number of apartments in the local area and a wider trend across the East that’s seen commercial buildings converted into residential. The trend has caused a mini-gentrification with quality cafes such as Bar M (formerly known as Bar Machiavelli) and Marta establishing themselves. The past few years have also seen an increase in Paddington residents mooring boats at Rushcutters Bay Marina, enjoying the revamped park with their kids and dog, and dining at the recently renovated CYC.
2. Edgecliff upgrades
Recent upgrades at Edgecliff Station have made it more accessible and inviting. This has had a massive impact on the surrounding area, including Paddington. It’s just a 10-15 minute walk via Trumper Park to the station, making for an even easier commute to the city and beyond. There are also the revamped shops, services and supermarkets at Eastpoint Food Fair.
3. Future White City redevelopment
The redevelopment of the iconic White City site by the Hakkoah Club has been a long time in the planning. White City has a long history stretching back almost a hundred years in the local area. It was established in 1922 to host the NSW Championships and remained Sydney’s premier tennis venue and regularly hosted top-level events such as the Davis Cup until the Sydney Tennis Centre open at Homebush in 2000. Woollahra Council has approved Stage 1 of the White City redevelopment at 30 Alma Street, Paddington and soon to come are a new football field, tennis courts, gym, creche, clubhouse, parking and cafe. This will further transform the area, and add several new amenities for locals to enjoy.
Situated just a couple of blocks from both Glenmore Road Public School and Sydney Grammar’s Prep School, this end-of-row terrace house has a 23.5-metre wide frontage.
